Halloween is coming! This spooky, fun holiday is a memorable one for kiddos of all ages, but make sure to keep safety top of mind so that all of your memories are good ones!
5 Things to Remember This Halloween From a Pediatric ENT
Here's what Dr. Goudy, founder of the NozeBot and Pediatric ENT wants to remind parents this Halloween as we prepare for trick-or-treating, parties, festivals and so much more.
Two words: glow sticks
Glow sticks aren't just fun, but they provide an easy way for you to keep your eyes on your child at all times - even as it gets dark outside! Trying to purchase a Halloween costume that has reflective elements is also a great idea, but not always possible if you have a child wanting to dress in a certain costume. Stocking up on glow necklaces, bracelets, crowns as your prepare for the upcoming holiday will be beneficial and fun!
Avoid Masks
If possible, choose face paint over masks. Not only is there the risk of potentially spreading lice by trying on masks at the store that have been tried on my oh so many people, but masks can block their vision while they're trying to have fun and lead to falling.
Screen their candy for chocking hazards
We know that parents will be ready to cash in on that mom tax as your kiddos come back with their bag full of sweets, but it really is important (especially with little ones!) to screen their candy for small pieces. Many times, even candy such as lolly pops can be a danger for wee ones!
Make sure you're with your kids if they're under age 12
Whether it is a big night out of trick-or-treating or attending a local costume celebration, if you have kids under the age of 12, being with them at these events is really important. With excitement and sugar mixed together kids can be extra rambunctious and possibly make choices that negatively impact their safety. Even if you have to walk 10 steps behind them, make sure you are there.
Use crosswalks
As simple as this sounds, using the crosswalk, looking both ways before you cross the street and other basic pedestrian rules often get overlooked during Halloween festivities. Remember, not everyone is trick-or-treating or celebrates this holiday and they might not be paying attention while driving at night, so make sure you are!
