8 Tips For Parents For a Safe 4th of July

The Fourth of July is a time for celebration, barbecues, and fireworks, but it's important for parents to prioritize safety during this festive occasion. 8 Tips For Parents For a Safe 4th of July

Enjoy celebrating with things all red, white and blue this 4th of July season, knowing that you and your kiddos will be healthy and safe during all the fun.

1. Insect Protection

Mosquitoes and other insects can be a nuisance during outdoor celebrations. Apply insect repellent containing DEET or other EPA-approved ingredients to protect your family from bug bites. Keep in mind that repellents with lower concentrations of DEET are recommended for children.

2. Sun Protection

Protect your family from harmful UV rays by applying sunscreen with a high SPF, even on cloudy days. Dress your children in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers their skin, and have them wear wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses. Seek shade whenever possible to minimize sun exposure.

3. Ear Protection

Since Dr. Noze Best was founded by a pediatric ENT, we talk an awful lot about ear health! Ear pain is no fun for kids of all ages, so entering the 4th of July with proper ear protection is really important. Fireworks are fun, but can be very loud to a baby's delicate ears. Not only can the noises scare your little one, in certain cases it can even damage your child’s hearing. If you’re going to a big fireworks show, bring along a pair of noise cancelling headphones for them to wear. This way, they can still enjoy seeing the beautiful lights, but don't need to hear them.

4. Attending Professional Firework Displays

Consider attending public firework displays hosted by professionals instead of lighting fireworks at home. These displays are often conducted with proper safety measures in place and provide a controlled environment for your family to enjoy the fireworks spectacle.

5. Practice Overall Firework Safety

If you plan to use fireworks at home, make sure to follow all safety guidelines. Read the instructions carefully and light fireworks in an open, outdoor area away from buildings, trees, and dry grass. Keep a bucket of water nearby for emergencies and never allow children to handle fireworks without adult supervision.

6. Consider Temporary ID Tattoos

These are such a wonderful invention especially for parents attending big festivals, amusement parks, etc with young ones who have a tendency to run off. You can purchase them here and have them customized so that if your child wanders off, anyone who finds them will easily be able to contact mom and dad.

7. Watch Your Drinks

If you happen to be attending a large 4th of July bash with people you don't know, it's important to be on the lookout for anyone putting an unwanted substance into your cup. In addition, kids are very curious and when thirsty, might just grab the nearest cup and take a sip. If your drink has alcohol in it, this is a situation you want to avoid. Keep an eye on your cups, parents!

8. Food and Grill Safety 101

4th of July means lots of delicious foods, but that also means we have to keep an eye on how they are being prepared and how long they are being left out. Many side dishes contain ingredients like cheese and mayo, so making sure they are kept cold or only out for an hour or less is essential.

In addition, lots of the 4th of July cooking is done on the grill, so keeping little ones away from that area will keep them safe from accidents and burns.
